For new deployments using iPads or other mobile tablets for data entry into GainSeeker, Hertzler Systems recommends the use of a Microsoft Remote Desktop Client app to connect to a PC (or Remote Desktop Session Host server / Terminal server) that runs the full GainSeeker client. This app is available for tablets on both iOS (iPad) and Android operating systems.
This permits the use of Python scripting to customize data entry inspections and lets you take advantage of the growing list of data entry features available for the PC Collect module. This also makes it easy to create one inspection that works correctly on both PC and mobile platforms.
When using Microsoft Remote Desktop on an iPad or other tablet, the following limitations apply:
The inspector will need to use the touch keyboard to 'type' values in the inspection.
Scrolling a sub-inspection does not always work well. Best practice is to create shorter sub-inspections that will not require scrolling.
The photo and video functions may not be useful for tablet data entry, since they will use a camera attached to the PC or server running the full GainSeeker client, not the camera on the tablet.
Barcode entry will require a keyboard wedge.
This recommendation supersedes earlier recommendations to use the GS Collect app (which supports LiveCode scripting but not Python scripting) and the GainSeeker Mobile Web Service for iPad data entry. (See also GS Collect Mobile App Requirements for Data Entry,)
