After configuring DMS for bar code data entry and printing bar code sheets, you can use a bar code reader to enter data in the DMS Data Entry module. Even though DMS has been specially configured for bar code data entry, you can use the keyboard and mouse at any time.
Entering standards and traceability values
The method used to print bar code sheets for standards and for traceability values will affect the steps needed to enter these values during data entry:
If you selected the Auto-return to entering Defects... check box (the default option) when printing the bar code sheet, the bar codes were printed with special codes so that virtually all tasks can be performed without touching the keyboard.
When the Defect list is highlighted on the DMS Data Entry screen, the scanned traceability value, process or part number is entered in the appropriate field and the focus returns immediately to the DMS Data Entry screen.
For detailed instructions, see Entering information via bar code reader only
If you cleared the Auto-return to entering Defects... check box when printing the bar code sheet, the user must navigate the standards and traceability fields using the mouse and the keyboard, then use the bar code reader to scan the values instead of typing them or selecting from a list.
To begin entering defects using the bar code reader, the user must click the mouse or press the TAB key to highlight the Defect list on the DMS Data Entry screen.
For detailed instructions, see Entering information via bar code reader and keyboard.
Entering defects
When the Defect list is highlighted on the DMS Data Entry screen, you can use the bar code reader to scan each defect individually, or you can scan a defect reason and then scan the count for that defect. For detailed instructions, see Entering defects with a bar code reader.
