GainSeeker® Version 8.6 Accommodates Longer Traceability Values in Manufacturing Data While Reducing Total Cost of Ownership
GOSHEN, INDIANA September 27, 2016—Hertzler Systems Inc. has released the latest version of its flagship GainSeeker® Suite SPC Software. The newest release allows for much longer traceability values in manufacturing data while supporting significantly smaller database sizes on popular databases.
The GainSeeker platform contains applications for Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE), Statistical Process Control (SPC), Defect Management, and costly Overpack in a single software package. It also includes a browser-based analysis tool to quickly and securely analyze your data from any device and a mobile data collection app for secure, customizable data entry anywhere on your shop floor.
Version 8.6 highlights:
Expanded Data Fields
Part numbers, process names, traceability values, and standard variables can now be expanded from their previous 30-character limit to a new limit that you specify – up to 240 characters. The same is true for DMS defect names and SPC standard descriptions, which were both previously limited to 14 characters.
“I’ve wanted to do this for a long time,” explained Byron Shetler, Chief Technology Officer at Hertzler Systems Inc. “This should save people a lot of time and hassle – both abbreviating text to fit in those fields and then ‘translating’ those abbreviations later on during analysis and reporting. As storage costs have decreased, saving space using abbreviations has become a less viable solution.”
Smaller Database Footprint on Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and MariaDB
Although GainSeeker version 8.6 can now store longer traceability values, it can simultaneously help you save disk space on your database server. That’s because any new tables created by GainSeeker now use variable-length character (varchar) columns instead of fixed-length character (char) columns. Tables in the new format are smaller because varchar fields don’t have to be padded with spaces like char fields do.
“This is a much more efficient way of storing data – especially GainSeeker’s traceability fields – and your database shouldn’t grow nearly as fast,” said Shetler. “We’d rather have our customers spend their time analyzing data and improving their processes than struggling with a database server that’s filling up.” He added, “This release adds varchar support for Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and MariaDB databases. In a future release, we also want to implement this for Oracle and Pervasive deployments.”
MariaDB Database Support
GainSeeker version 8.6 has been tested on MariaDB – a free, open-source database that can be used in place of MySQL. MariaDB is now supported as one of five GainSeeker database options available – the other four being Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and Pervasive.SQL.
